Shigeru Kawai SK-2 — Kigarashi soundboard and Millennium III action

We present the Shigeru Kawai SK-2, a grand piano conceived by the firm’s craftsmen to deliver a powerful and nuanced musical response. Its Millennium III action incorporates ABS-Carbon components, a carbon-fiber–reinforced composite that provides superior stiffness and durability, allowing lighter parts without sacrificing strength and control.

The keys, worked from selected fir, combine lightness and high durability. Their lengthened design and high-profile guide rails ensure a uniform touch from the tip to the rear of the key, as well as greater solidity in transmitting the performer’s dynamics.

The SK-2’s soundboard is made of carefully selected spruce and is subjected to natural aging using the traditional Kigarashi method. This slow and entirely natural process allows the wood to reach a sonic balance that contributes to the warmth and tonal richness characteristic of Shigeru pianos.
