Description
When Heinrich Engelhardt Steinweg arrived in the United States in 1850, he founded Steinway & Sons, which is still in the family today. Over the course of its legendary presence in the music world, Steinway has amassed over 125 patents. The house split into 2 factories, one in New York and one in Hamburg. Although today the models are standardized, it is still possible to recognize small differences in the sound of a New York steinway compared to a Hamburg steinway.
The Steinway & Sons model B piano, serial number 49176, is made of rosewood and has two pedals. The Steinway mechanism had a rapid evolution, through some intermediate prototype versions, which culminated in its freezing to the best version, which is the one today in the patent, around the early 1900s. Typical of this unique mechanism is the dampening of all parts using non-rigid fixings, thus obtaining the maximum possibility of vibration and resonance of the Mechanics-Tailpiece assembly. This is also one of the secrets that gives Steinway its typical timbre. The sound is characterized by very balanced harmonics and the color range is very wide. In the medium-low register the timbre is round and enveloping and in singing the piano is airy and brilliant but never glassy. It is a versatile sound that can embrace any musical genre, from classical contrapuntal to jazz and contemporary music.
