Description
Instrument: Steinway & Sons Model O “Sheraton” grand, 5'10½" (180 cm). Bench included. Finish: high-polished Honduras mahogany in a distinctive Art-Case design.
This example is an exceptionally rare Sheraton Art-Case Model O (Sketch No. 617a). It features double-gated legs with a stretcher joining the legs and lyre—an ornamental configuration characteristic of the sketch. According to documentation, this design corresponds to a New York Grand Model O completed on December 3, 1910, and shipped to dealer Cluett & Sons of Albany, New York on June 5, 1911. Serial number: 147554. From available research, production of this variant appears to have been extremely limited (possibly only two to four instruments ever built).
History and restoration: The piano was acquired in 1994 and underwent a complete rebuild and refinish, including installation of a new soundboard by Beethoven Pianos (New York City). The former owners were professional artists and collectors who later relocated from Cambridge, NY to Virginia and placed the instrument for sale.
Notes on quality: This Sheraton Model O presents outstanding tonal clarity, a refined touch and the visual presence of a museum-quality case. It represents a rare opportunity to own a fully rebuilt Steinway grand from the Golden Age of the company—an instrument prized by discerning musicians and collectors alike.
