Baldwin Acrosonic Piano

When we are interested in buying a keyboard instrument, we consider between the upright and the grand piano. Choosing an upright piano usually involves less cost and space saving - and as we know, the price and space the instrument will take is important, if not crucial factors. This awareness was also shared by nineteenth-century piano makers, hence even the size of the upright piano they tried to minimize. Among upright pianos, popular models were the so-called spinets (the lowest instruments) and consoles (the size between the spinet and studio piano).

And so the height of spinets is usually less than 100cm (36"-40"), while upright pianos up to 110cm are called consoles (40"-44"). Here there is a smaller mechanism than in studio and professional pianos, additionally the spinet is lower.

A very popular line of spinets and consoles were Acrosonic models produced since 1936 by the legendary American factory Baldwin. These instruments for homes and schools were extremely popular. Parents were particularly keen to choose them for their children who were beginning their adventure with music. To this day, used and restored models are chosen by this group of people, although much less frequently than in the past.

What does Acrosonic piano mean? You have to admit that it sounds cosmic! And yet, it derives from the combination of the Greek words "acros" and "sonus" - in translation it means "best sound", "exceptional tone".

According to various sources, Acrosonic models of upright pianos were produced in sizes ranging from 36" (spinets) to small and medium-sized 40" and 42" high consoles.
