“Alles klar” is a popular colloquial German expression that has numerous connotations, depending on how it is used. But it literally translates in English to “All Clear” – an appropriate description of this very unconventional Schimmel ‘Glas’ Art Case grand.
This is a perplexing instrument. There’s something fascinating about being able to ‘see through its skin’ and behold the intricate skeleton and mechanical inner workings that are normally not visible. Schimmel went to great lengths to enhance this experience by making the structural inner rim, frame, and cast-iron plate a brilliant white that almost glows through the transparent crystal-like cabinetry.
One can’t help but be reminded of the effect of an atrium, such as the famous glass ‘Louvre Pyramid’ entryway to that museum in Paris. Like an atrium, ‘Glas’ allows daylight in through its clear lid and sides. And it can also emit light from within at night with a special built-in adjustable brightness lighting system, described by Schimmel as “integrated under the gold-plated decorative strips around the wing wall, in the lid, in the front above the keys, and in the foot blocks.”
